The Wisconsin State MATHCOUNTS Competition is part of a nationwide program that challenges middle school students in grades 6–8 to solve a wide variety of math problems. The competition series consists of four levels—school, chapter, state, and national—and each level features four rounds: Sprint, Target, Team, and Countdown. Altogether, the rounds take approximately three hours to complete and test students’ skills in areas such as probability, geometry, statistics, and linear algebra. The program is designed to enhance mathematical thinking, promote excellence, and encourage students to pursue advanced math courses throughout their school years. For more information, visit MathCounts.
In Wisconsin, the competition is sponsored by the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers, who help organize the regional rounds across the state. Schools compete with teams of four students, plus up to ten additional individuals, for a total of 14 participants per school. Students who succeed at the regional level advance to the State competition, with top performers earning the opportunity to compete nationally. Preparation for MATHCOUNTS begins in November, giving students and teachers several months to tackle challenging math problems and develop their problem-solving skills.
This year, the EAGLE School MathCounts team performed exceptionally well despite scheduling conflicts with National History Day and Science Olympiad. The team earned Fourth Place overall at the Wisconsin State Competition, and Eric Zhang (’26) placed Fourth individually, earning a spot at the National Competition in Orlando this May. Congratulations to our students for their dedication, hard work, and impressive achievements!
