EAGLE Alumni Spotlight: Summer Camp Assistants
For the second year in a row, EAGLE Alumni have served as volunteer Camp Assistants during our two weeks of summer camp. These students play a vital role in the success of EAGLE summer camps, whether they are helping campers with projects or playing on the playground. Two EAGLE alumni, Liam Bradley and Varnika Arianathan, have assisted at summer camp for both years.

Liam Bradley, EAGLE ‘23
Liam has assisted the Chemistry Kids and Environmental Chemistry camps, led by Monona Grove High School teacher LJ Neumann, for two years. Pop into the classroom and you might see Liam setting up materials for a lab or drawing a picture on the board to explain a procedure. Liam has discovered, partly through his experiences as a Camp Assistant, that he is interested in becoming a teacher. Liam plans to return to camp next year as well. “Not only is the community great, the camp is well structured,” he says. Camper Ameya appreciates how Liam inspires all the young chemists at camp: “Liam is really good at doing science,” she says. Mr. Neumann agrees, noting that “Liam is ready to help with whatever is needed, whenever, and connects really well with the kids. He’s also brave, jumping in to try out teaching and explaining something complicated.”

Varnika Arianathan, EAGLE ‘23
Varnika has assisted in a variety of camps during her two summers with us: Carnival of the Animals, Show Choir, Jewelry Making, and Fairy Houses, STEM, & Storytelling. When asked why she returned to be a Camp Assistant for a second year, Varnika said, “I enjoyed hanging out with the students and teachers that I grew up with at EAGLE. It’s fun meeting new kids and helping them in the summer.” The kids loved meeting Varnika as well, and appreciated her helpful presence. “She helped a lot backstage,” said Willow, who worked with Varnika during Carnival of the Animals camp. “She helped us a lot when we were trying to cross-stitch,” said Caroline. Camp Instructor Katie McEnaney said, “Varnika was a huge asset to our Fairy Houses, STEM, and Storytelling Club. She was the goddess of the glue gun and helped everyone’s incredible creations come together (and stay together).”
