Throughout the first semester, our 6/7s and 7/8s are giving back to their school and community by completing a variety of service projects. They’ve been divided into seven groups, and with the help of mentor teachers, these sixty middle school students are donating their time and talent in the following ways:
Food Pantry Gardeners ⇨ These hard-working middle-schoolers, with assistance from Jack, are harvesting produce and preparing the Lacy Food Pantry Garden for winter. They are also helping the farm manager package cornmeal for distribution to local food pantries.
Library Supporters ⇨ Under the direction of Katie, these literacy advocates are creating book posters for the children’s section of the Goodman South library, as well as lending a hand at the Goodman South and Fitchburg libraries.
Green and Healthy Helpers ⇨ This environmentally conscious group, with guidance from Maggie, are working on projects around our school to promote sustainability, including planting an apple tree espalier behind the science classrooms.
ReStore Assistants ⇨ Under the supervision of Martha, these thoughtful and ambitious students are sorting and shelving donations at the Odana Road Habitat for Humanity ReStore, where proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity projects.
Montessori Buddies ⇨ This gregarious team, with Ellen’s guidance, are mentoring young students at Greenway Crossing Montessori by reading together and fostering positive relationships through art, writing, and games.
Park Caretakers ⇨ This community-minded group, led by Mrs. McCulley, is working at EAGLE and the neighboring Gunflint Trail Park to take care of our gardens and to help maintain the prairies and park space around our school.
Welcome Basket Creators ⇨ These caring and committed students, with the help of Jessica, are creating “Welcome Home” baskets of household supplies for formerly homeless families and individuals moving into apartments managed by Porchlight.

Book Bundlers
This creative group of students, led by Ellen, has worked with staff at the Fitchburg Library to get experience in creating book bundles for young readers. Together, they have also shopped at Half Price Books to purchase books they will parcel with learning activities and donate to a local food pantry. They hope that parents and children who visit the pantry will take home a book bundle to enjoy some family reading time.
Video Producers
These tech-savvy middle school students, under the guidance of Jack M. and staff from FACTv, are producing a video featuring Fitchburg businesses with a GREEN focus.
Grandparents’ Breakfast Hosts
Grandparents and grandfriends of our 3/4 students benefited from the efforts of this ambitious group. Under the direction of Jessica, and in conjunction with the Junior 3/4s and Jenn, these students hosted a special Grandparents’ Breakfast that will included delicious food and delightful entertainment.
Park Caretakers
This energetic group, with the help of Maggie vB. and Denise M., is working with Fitchburg Parks to continue several Gunflint Trail Park maintenance projects. They are also planting and weeding the many new garden spaces around our school.
Oral Historians
These young history enthusiasts have researched the Cold War era and interviewed local seniors and recorded their memories of that time period.
Montessori Book Buddies
These helpful middle-schoolers, under the guidance of Mary Kay, are buddying up with young students at Greenway Crossing Montessori to enjoy the experience of reading together and responding to literature through art, writing, and games. Our students are excited to build community with their young buddies through this interactive and inspiring process.
